In 1948 Faculty of Fine Art (former Institute of Fine Art) established with only three Departments under the leadership of shilpacharya Zainul Abedin. In 1955 Oriental Art Department established with some optimistic motivation. The objective of the Oriental art Department is to practice the glorious and rich traditional art of Asia to save and nurture the continuity of our own art trend. Following the objective and ideal of Bengal school, which originated in opposition to western academic realism, the student of oriental art department has been practicing art with great success since 1955. So, in the midst of great enthusiasm for modernity and world art, this department is able to acquaint us with our own traditional art. Former Principal Shafiqul Ameen, Professor Rashid Chowdhury, professor Aminul Islam, and Professor Md. Abul Hashem Khan had been teachers of this department from the very beginning. Associate professor Shawkatuzzaman who died of incurable disease was also an efficient teacher of this department.

Professor Dr. Md Abdus Satter, Associate professor Nasreen Begum, Assistant Professor Abdul Aziz, Lecturer Mizanur Rahman Fakir, and Malay Bala are the teachers of this department at present. All the sectors of this department have enriched with the active participation of the above-mentioned teachers. Not only that, their teaching ability, creativity, participation in various workshop and exhibition both in a home and abroad and receiving awards have increased reputation and honor of this department. This department is determined to spread the news of these achievements and the trend of traditional art all over the world. This department is also accountable to society and country. At present, there are ninety students in this department. The duration of B.F.A (honors) course is for four years and M.F.A is for two years in this department. After passing out H.S.C Exam and admission test a student can enroll in this department.
