Japan, for its miraculous economic boom, outstanding success in the area of science and technology, uniquely unique culture, long-standing history, and heritage is always a subject matter of study in the world academia, particularly, after the World War II. The Japanese model of the economy, management, science, and technology are still examined by scholars with great enthusiasm. To study and understand the reasons behind Japan’s Economic Development, become familiar with great Japanese culture and customs which have significantly contributed to miraculous economic development, future engagements with Japan in the area of trade-aid and investment and fulfill the increasing demand of Japanese Studies among the Students, University of Dhaka has recently transformed Japan Study Center (JSC) as Department of Japanese Studies (DJS) which will be heartily welcoming its first batch of undergraduate students from the academic year 2017-18 . The University of Dhaka is the pioneer to start the new era of Japanese Studies in Bangladesh.

In this very unique department students are expected to learn about Japan from wider perspectives. Students, both in Honours and Masters levels, will learn Japanese culture, society, economy, politics, language, anthropology, archeology, literature, business, management, history, international relations, media, science, and technology. Introductory courses in economics, political science, sociology, and business studies are also integrated in the programme with an intention to ensure multidisciplinary knowledge of the students and help them to excel their career in all relevant fields. Japan generously promotes Japanese Studies students and faculty members offering Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho:MEXT) scholarship, scholarship for short courses at Sophia University and Tokyo University, exchange programmes at Shimane University, projects, study tour, sponsoring faculty members to participate in international conferences, donating books for the library and sending Japanese professors for the benefit of the students.

The Department of Japanese Studies has state-of-the-art facilities to guarantee quality learning for the student. The Department comprises incomparable infrastructure labeled as ‘Mini Japan’ sponsored by Abul Barkat Peace and Progress Foundation, library with most updated books donated by Japan Foundation and computer lab, projectors and other academic accessories through the courtesy of Marium Foundation. Founder Chairman of the department Professor Dr. Abul Barkat leads a talented pool of faculty members who have national and international exposure of education and teaching. Faculty members’ first and foremost priority is to ensure quality teaching and customized care to every student with an objective to produce Japanologists who can contribute nationally as well as globally.
