Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) is an educational establishment that is located at Palasi Dhaka. Its Educational Institute Identification Number or EIIN, is 136618. On 19 April, 1971, it was first put into operation. Its motto is The ocean of knowledge.

The Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology campus is in the heart of the city of Dhaka. It has a compact campus with halls of residence within walking distance of the academic building. At present, the campus occupies 83.9 acres of land. The academic area itself occupies 31.81 acres of land defined by Shahid Sharani, Bakshi Bazar Road and Asian Highway. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology or BUET is a public university in Bangladesh, which focuses on the study of engineering and architecture. Founded in 1912, it is the oldest institution for the study of architecture, engineering and urban planning in Bangladesh.
Every year, around 1055 students get accepted to their undergraduate programs to study architecture, engineering, and urban planning. Of the 10,000 candidates selected to write the undergraduate admission test from an initial application pond of over 10,000 applicants, only about the top 10% are admitted. Around 1000 graduate students are accepted into their Masters and Ph.D. programmes on a yearly basis. The total number of teachers is around 661. The university has continued to expand over the last three decades. Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has been ranked 135th among the Asian universities in the 2018 edition of QS World University Rankings.
Dacca Survey School was established in 1876 as a survey school at Nalgola, west of the current Sir Salimullah Medical College campus, in Old Dhaka by the then Government of Bengal of British India. It has given a survey course of two years to train land surveyors, at the end of which students competed at the Sub-Overseer’s examination. According to a report on public instruction in Bengal, on 31 March 1903, Dacca Survey School had 117 students of which 103 were Hindus and fourteen 14 were Muslims. In 1908, the school begins to offer diploma degrees. Khwaja Ahsanullah, a philanthropist, and member of the Dhaka Nawab Family endowed donations for growing the survey school. After his death in 1901, his son, the then Nawab of Dhaka, Khwaja Salimullah liberate 112,000 rupees grant in 1902 in accordance. As an acceptance of this contribution, the school was renamed to Ahsanullah School of Engineering.
The school offered three-year long diploma courses in electrical engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering. In 1912, the university was moved to its current premises. A. K. Fazlul Huq, the then Prime Minister of Bengal, appointed Hakim Ali as the principal of the school in 1938. After the partition of India in 1947, the school was upgraded to Ahsanullah Engineering College, as a Faculty of Engineering under the University of Dhaka, offering four-year bachelor’s course in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, and Metallurgical Engineering. In 1948, the Government of East Pakistan permitted recognition to the engineering college.
On 1 June 1962, in order to create facilities for postgraduate studies and research, the engineering college was upgraded to East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (EPUET). Rashid was employed the first vice-chancellor of the university. During this period, EPUET offered courses in mechanical, electrical, civil, metallurgical, chemical engineering, and architecture. After the liberation war of 1971, EPUET was renamed to Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).
