DEPARTMENT OF IMMUNOLOGY

The Department of Immunology started its journey at Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences and Hospital (BIHSH) since 2005 at the C-Block of the Single storied Building (Tin-shed). At present, the department runs with ELISA, agglutination, Nephelometry, Immunochromatography, and photo-optical based techniques. A team of skilled and well-experienced laboratory personnel performs routine laboratory tests for infectious, autoimmune diseases, tumor biology and immunochemistry in a double shift period starting from 8:00 a.m to 11:00 p.m.

The Department is committed to giving quality reports of laboratory tests in the earliest possible time. Test specimens come from BIHS Center (both Out and In-Patients Department), different Urban HealthCare Centers of HealthCare Development Project (HCDP) in and around Dhaka City and also from North Bengal Medical College Hospital (NBMCH). The gradual increasing trend regarding the number of specimens is observed day by day. The academic activities of BIHS run parallel with the routine laboratory services. For the last 8 years, BIHS has been running BSc (Hon’s) in Laboratory Sciences (initially) and BSc in Health (Laboratory) Technology course at present. However, the Departmental teachers are always occupied with scheduled lectures, tutorials, assignment, examinations of students of these courses along with their routine Laboratory services.

The idea of MS in Immunology has recently been introduced in Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) with an aim to provide the Students with a broad understanding of the complex field of Immunology. It also provides an insight into the most recent advances in both scientific and clinical immunological research. This MS in immunology includes a study of immunological processes and mechanism, how they contribute to disease and how they might be manipulated therapeutically. By focusing on the molecules, cells, organs, and genes of the immune system, their interaction and how they are activated and regulated, students will develop a deep understanding of the pathological process underpinning immune-mediated disease and how they might be controlled. From a practical perspective, the course involves in-depth instruction in modern methodologies used in immunology/biomedical research, including the fundamentals of molecular and cellular biology. Students will also be trained in experimental design, data handling, and basic research skills.

The program is a full-time, two-year course, specifically divided into different integrated courses that are accommodated in a total of 80 credits.
