The Department of Mathematics of Uttara University has been opened in the year 2004 considering the need for expanding higher education with affordable cost in the country. It is noted that a nation can be progressed if there is widespread application of science and technology, especially the basic science. Mathematics is required in all modern aspects of civilization involving engineering & technology, biomedical & medical physics, and engineering, environmental conservation and production of renewable & non-renewable energy, information, and communication technology, space science and technology and many other branches of science.
Uttara University has rightly apprehended the urge of the students who were looking for the avenue of higher studies in Mathematics and began to offer the M.Sc.(Final) in Mathematics program in its city campus for the first time within the private universities. Near about 700 students obtained the postgraduate degree (M. Sc.) in Mathematics from this Department who are playing important role in nation building process from home and abroad. We understand that the government has encouraged introducing higher studies on basic science in the private universities. Uttara University has become the pioneer in the country in this respect by introducing graduate program in Mathematics (M.Sc. Final) and still continuing to be the only university where graduate program in Mathematics is being offered.
The authority of the university is considering to further expand the curriculum of Mathematics by introducing the 2 years M. Sc. and 4-year bachelor programs in Mathematics. The Department is very rich with faculty members having postgraduate degree with Ph. D and with large number of research publications. Some of the faculties are engaged in supervising M. Phil and Ph. D. students of public universities and produced good number of Ph. Ds in Mathematics It is anticipated that the Mathematics Department will soon introduce the graduate programme leading to Ph. D. if the government encourages to pursue such program.
